Everyone is a musician! There is always a part for everyone - we can sing, we can clap, we can pick a simple or a sophisticated instrument, whichever tickles our fancy and whatever is manageable. As a timid eight-year-old, I would never have imagined the wondrous sphere of learning that music would guide me through when I was given the oboe, my very first instrument. The unfading memory of being part of an orchestral performance with almost a hundred other children on stage has empowered me to explore the boundless realm of music. Without the pleasures of sharing and the interactions involved, music cannot come to its full realisation.

Unlike many children, I never really anticipated or dreamt about my future career inclination but my passion to fulfil my mission led me through the different stages of learning. Whether it was music studies to explore the world of music, music performance to reach people’s hearts, music composition to express creative ideas or music education to share my musical interests with the younger generation, each one has been a meaningful venture. If music has not helped me grow in wisdom, it has definitely shaped me as a curious lifelong learner who has tirelessly attempted a considerable number of orchestral instruments from both the Western and Chinese disciplines.

In my teaching career, I was fortunate to be able to hone my skills at a prestigious school with a robust music performance programme for many years before I joined an International Baccalaureate (IB) bilingual school where I have undertaken training on the Primary Years (PYP), Middle Years (MYP) and Diploma (DP) Music and Arts Programmes in the past decade. Through the years, I have also been involved in various management capacities, such as Head of House, Head of the Arts, Head of Arts and Culture Promotion Team, Head of Student Activities and Summer School and served on the Primary Leadership Team and the Admissions Committee. These experiences have led to an in-depth understanding of school operations and the importance of efficient collaboration amongst the various departments in order to benefit the holistic development of every student.

Since 2013, my dedicated service to education has earned me the opportunity to be invited to participate in Accreditation visits as a school evaluator with the Council of International Schools. These visits have taken me to Australia and major cities in Mainland China. They have been truly humbling and rewarding experiences as I exchange ideas with evaluators from various countries and learn from the successes of many schools in the region, enabling insights for education from broader perspectives.

Despite the training and experience I have gone through, the most direct inspirations have always come from the classroom where students help me reflect on how to be a better teacher day after day, revitalising my zest for education year after year. It is with great delight that I am joining Han Academy to walk the students through the amazing journey of musical discoveries, believing that everyone can be a musician.
